The Alaska Outdoors Story
I first traveled to Alaska in 1991; I was in college studying Biology and Ecology and a part time river guide in search of adventure. Very early on in my guiding career I discovered a passion for exploring nature with others and the strong pull of Alaska. After graduating in 1992, I returned to Alaska and have since traveled throughout the state as a tour guide, naturalist, and manager for several Alaska adventure tour companies.
Throughout my experiences participating in Alaska adventure travel, I have shared thousands of experiences with travelers from throughout the world. Without a doubt, the most memorable experiences we have shared together have occurred in the outdoors, away from the modern infrastructure that permeates most of our busy lives. The solitude in the Alaskan wilderness is something to be felt and to truly experience this you must explore Alaska in the outdoors.
In 1999 I began researching and in 2001, started Alaska Outdoors. I wanted to offer an Alaska travel experience that emphasized the outdoors and the rejuvenating properties of wilderness. I chose my favorite Alaskan parks and protected areas that unite my interest in biology and my love of camping, with the most exciting outdoor activities available in Alaska. Thus, Alaska Outdoors was born.
I had 9 guests that post 9/11 year and ran 2 trips. Alaska Outdoors has grown considerably since then, and now hosts hundreds of travelers from throughout the world on multi day camping trips throughout the state.
Recently, Alaska Outdoors was recognized by National Geographic Adventure as one of the best outfitters on Earth, a distinction with which we are very proud.
I feel very fortunate; we have attracted a team of expert guides who are among the best in the business. They understand their role in shaping your Alaska travel experience and truly love what they do.
We all work well together at our base camp in Wasilla, our behind the scenes systems are well developed, and our full attention is spent experiencing Alaska and taking care of our visitors. “Your guide went out of his way to ensure that everyone got the most out of their vacation. He was very knowledgeable on the plants and animals and shared that knowledge with the group. I felt safe and comfortable the entire trip. I would give him a 10/10! All of our dinners by FAR exceeded my expectations. Breakfast blew me away as well. There were always multiple things to choose from and hot, delicious food to start and end the day with. Never went hungry that’s for sure!”
“10/10 I think your guide was very knowledgeable, experienced, friendly, and efficient plus a careful & safe driver – I would recommend your company highly to anyone. I enjoyed the whole trip – only wish it was longer!! (Alaska is so huge!)”
“I would encourage anyone who has ever thought about going to Alaska to give you guys a call. You make it fun, easy, and economical. Camping allows you to spend the majority of your time actually exploring the places you pick to see. All the trails or activities were either a very short drive (less than 10 minutes), or within walking distance from the campsites. The scenery is awesome, and you’ll get to see just about every animal Alaska has to offer in the area you choose to explore. The key word in all this is “FUN”! ”
